Veteran Services

The Franklin County Recorder’s Office encourages veterans to have their important military discharge documents recorded with our office for safekeeping. If the original is ever lost, damaged or destroyed, certified copies can always be retrieved from our office.

Original documents or Veterans Administration certified copies of discharge records, also known as a DD214, are accepted for filing Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. After recording, you will receive a certified copy along with your original document returned. At the time of recording, the Social Security number of the veteran will be redacted to prevent identity theft.

There is no cost to our veterans to record a military discharge record or to receive certified copies.

Veteran ID Cards

The Franklin County Recorder’s Office is pleased to announce a new initiative benefiting our United States Military Veterans. This program allows Franklin County veterans to obtain a Document Identification Card from our office. This card will display a photograph of the veteran, military service dates, and other pertinent information regarding the veteran’s service to our country. This card contains their specific document number, so the discharge record can be rapidly located by his office when needed. The cost to obtain the card is $1. Also, an escrow account has been established by the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 3 Capital City, to provide cards to low income or homeless veterans.

In order to receive a United States Veteran Document Identification Card, veterans must record their military discharge with the Franklin County Recorder’s Office and show two forms of current and valid identification. The only forms of identification we will accept are:

  • An original or certified birth certificate
  • Identification card issued by the US Department of Veterans Affairs
  • United States military identification card
  • Social Security card
  • State issued license or permit to carry a concealed weapon
  • State issued motor vehicle operator’s license
  • State issued identification card
  • Valid US passport

The Veteran ID card can be useful to veterans to prove eligibility for a number of services and benefits including:

  • Identification
  • Employment Applications
  • Veterans’ Home Loans
  • Veterans’ Hospital Services
  • Student Loans
  • Burial Benefits

Discounts at participating retail establishments and restaurants
